HERO'S MAIDS

HERO'S MAIDS

The play is the most imaginative and exuberant of any Shakespeare’s comedies. It combines elements of robust hilarity with serious commentaries on friendship, love, honor, and family. The play contrasts two lovers, Benedick and Beatrice, in a witty and suspenseful battle of the sexes. Attracted to each other yet they are very stubborn and hate the notion of love and swore never to marry until their friend hatched plans to unite them. Meanwhile, Beatrice's cousin, Hero, is in love with Claudio and so is Claudio. My inspiration comes from contemporary images of wealthy class but set in Cavalier. The softness and voluptuousness of fabric and the falling collar that was in fashion at the time make give a realistic look to the people in a way that a strict Elizabethan style might not.
